Offset your carbon emissions!
Why carbon offset?

Global warming, which can be traced to increased greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere, is believed to be one of the greatest threats to the environment.

The burning of fossil fuels for energy generation, the decimation of forests, and soil erosion are believed to be the main causes of increased greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere, which again leads to warming. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most important greenhouse gas as regards magnitude.

Two main viable options exist to achieve balance in the Earth’s carbon cycle: first, the reduction of emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and second, the sequestration of carbon through forestry. Sequestering carbon from the atmosphere’s carbon dioxide through forestry releases oxygen.

Everyone needs to do their bit to combat the effects of greenhouse gases. Every individual’s contribution matters.

Carbon offset is achieved when an equal amount of carbon is sequestered through vegetations as is released into the atmosphere. Through carbon sequestration, individuals and businesses can offet the undesirable effects of greenhouse gases that are released through their burning of fossil fuels. In this way, they become “carbon neutral”. The Iceland Carbon Fund enables the carbon offsetting of vehicle use and flights.

Does offsetting carbon mean a sort of “absolution”?

No, carbon offestting does not entail any sort of “absolution” in the sense that the Iceland Carbon Fund’s customers can cause air pollution the future as they please, so long as they pay for the sequestration of the corresponding carbon in soil. Global warming, which is traced to increased concentrations of greenhouse gases, is believed to be one of the greatest environmental threats facing the world. The most effective way to achieve results is to reduce emissions of polluting gases. Each individual must therefore be encouraged to do as much as possible to seek ways to reduce his or her own emissions, while at the same time sequester in soil the amount of carbon dioxide which is inevitably released through daily living.
