The Government of Iceland is a proud sponsor of the Iceland Carbon Fund, as the ideology of the Fund is fully in harmony with the Government’s Policy Statement. The Iceland Carbon Fund can help to achieve the long-term goal set by the Government, of reducing the net emission of greenhouse gases. The Government is pleased that non-governmental organisations, like the Icelandic Forestry Association and the Icelandic Environment Association, enable the general public and corporations to take responsibility for their greenhouse gas emissions, and hopes that individuals and corporations will respond well to this project. The Government of Iceland will do its part and has already decided to offset all the vehicles of the Government Offices of Iceland, as well as all employee flights.
The Government of Iceland has also decided to direct all government agencies to purchase more eco-friendly cars, when renewing publicly owned vehicles. By the end of the year 2008 the goal is that 10% of publicly owned vehicles will be fuelled by ecological fuel, 20% by the end of the year 2010 and 35% at the end of the year 2012. In addition, excise tax on methane cars has been abolished until the end of the year 2009, in order to encourage purchases of more eco-friendly cars.
