Arion Bank is very happy to be involved in this exciting and much needed project. The Bank's support for environmental issues stems all the way back to the days of Búnaðarbanki (the Agricultural Bank of Iceland). And it was precisely the Agricultural Bank that was one of the first—if the not the first—enterprise to make the beauty and purity of Icelandic nature the subject of its advertising. A lot of water has flown under the bridge since then and one can say that, like so many other things in Icelandic society, environmental issues have been globalised in a very short time. We are all citizens of a global village that has to contend with common problems on the environmental front and nothing can be achieved unless nations join forces. Although our contribution may not seem great on a global scale, one cannot emphasise enough that every step taken towards improving our environment in the future is a step towards reducing the impact that climatic changes have had and may continue to have on our quality of life.
In addition to being sponsors of the Icelandic Carbon Fund, the management of Arion Bank has decided, in collaboration with its employees, to "de-carbonize" itself. This means, in other words, that the Bank intends to plant trees to compensate for the carbon dioxide emitted by vehicles run by Arion Bank employees in Iceland, as well as the pollution caused by their business flights to and from abroad.
